The best staircases for accessing a converted loft
If you have chosen to convert your loft, you may not have considered the complications that come with adding a staircase to your existing home. Luckily, there are a variety of unique and stylish staircases for you to choose from that will have minimal impact on your house and won’t make the space feel too cramped.
As the name suggests, Space Saver staircases are quite compact, which is useful when you don’t have much room to work with. These stairs work by cutting out half of each step on alternating sides, so you climb up on your right, then left, and so on. This means the flight has a steep incline and is much smaller than ordinary stairs. They are useful for accessing your converted loft, however, there are strict regulations with Space Saver staircases. To limit foot traffic, this staircase must only be used to access a single room, so it cannot lead to a second living area.
If the loft conversion is going to be an ensuite bathroom or extra storage space for a bedroom, then a private staircase might be the best choice. It can be small and take up the space that a closet would, giving direct access from one room. However, it cannot lead to a second bedroom because then regulations about fire separation will be applicable. If suitable, a small, private staircase can be subtle and aesthetically pleasing.
The health and safety regulations concerning fire separation can be quite difficult to navigate when creating a staircase for your converted loft. If you create an open plan loft on a mezzanine floor then it is much easier to adhere to regulations when it comes to the staircase. This is because it is technically all one room, and no fire doors or specific walls are needed. With this choice you can design a large, statement staircase which will be the centrepiece in your living area.
Often a loft conversion is used to add extra living space to a small home, and so it can be difficult to find a place for a whole new staircase. A traditional pitched staircase takes up a fair amount of room, but a spiral staircase could be the solution. The design of spiral staircases enables them to have barely any pitch, and they only use a small area of floor space. There are many designs for you to choose from, so that the spiral staircase can be made into a unique, aesthetically pleasing, focal point of the room.
A practical way of introducing stairs for your loft conversion is to continue your existing staircase. This method is efficient and an effective use of space, as the stairs are simply added directly above where your staircase would have ended. If you choose this solution it will mean you don’t have to find extra floor space in your house for another staircase. Also, it won’t have to be a tiny, impractical flight of stairs, you can continue with the size of your original staircase.
