How to Keep Your Converted Loft Warm in Winter
Converting your loft is a fantastic way to make use of abandoned space and bring it to life by creating your dream room. But despite the scientific principle that heat rises, lofts do seem to suffer dips in temperature due to ineffective heating and poor insulation, resulting in heat escaping through the roof. Not only can this cause your loft space to be chilly, but poor insulation can also result in mould build-up due to condensation. Luckily there are plenty of things you can do during and after the construction phase to combat this issue, allowing you to enjoy your brand new loft conversion in comfort.
Effectively insulate your loft
Your first step to warm up your loft is during the construction process, making sure to install effective insulation. The cost of insulation might seem pricey, but in the long run it will be kinder to both the environment and your pocket, as well as allowing you to fully enjoy your converted loft space. Trusted specialists should be able to cater for your insulation needs, so ask about what they can provide during construction.
Radiators
One obvious, cheap and convenient option is to use your existing central heating system and install extra radiators in your loft space. They can also come in different styles to fit your chosen decor. However, not all central heating systems have a big enough output to accommodate this, and therefore some may need to be upgraded to allow for this addition. Towel rails can also act as mini-radiators, and also serve the dual purpose of drying your towels. The drawback with radiators is that they take up precious space in what might already be a fairly small room.
Underfloor heating
A slightly more expensive choice is underfloor heating, which works by installing copper pipes full of warm water under your floors, and this heat spreads to the rest of the room. This saves space by excluding the need to fit radiators and allowing you to use those areas to fit bookshelves or other furniture. You also don’t need to adjust your own heating system, as underfloor heating is an entirely separate system. However, repairing it can be a more difficult process than fixing a radiator.
Electric heating
If you have solar panels, then this will allow you to produce your own green energy, slashing your bills in the long run. Electric heating can also be provided via portable heaters; although they are small and have limited ability to heat, they may be useful for smaller spaces, though not entirely safe for young children.
Window dressings
Simple but effective, adorning your windows and skylights with appropriate window dressings can help to keep the loft toasty in winter and cool in summer. Thick curtains can act to retain warmth, as can blinds which allow the user to control the light and heat levels in the room.
