Can All Lofts Be Converted?
As we all yearn for more space we think about our options with our current homes. The economy is still recovering, meaning most people don’t like the idea of moving just yet. This leaves only the option to modify existing homes to create more usable, liveable space.
One area of the home most underutilised is the loft, filled with our unwanted junk and usually an unoccupied space. This is the ideal space to be converted into an office space, and extra bedroom or even into a bathroom. But is there enough space? As we poke our heads through the loft hatch we often wonder how on earth anyone manages to make a functional room from this dark, limited space.
While it’s not uncommon for a loft to be unfit for conversion, there are a lot of things which can easily be fixed or adjusted to make a conversion possible.
Is Head Height Your Problem?
With the angle of a roof getting more and more acute as it reaches the edge of your home, you could be forgiven for thinking that there isn’t enough head space for you to stand up in your loft space. But while it is true that the angle of your roof can be tricky, it doesn’t mean that once converted, you won’t have enough head space – don’t forget that most roofs only have two sloped sides, leaving a long strip of space with plenty of room to stand up naturally.
If you don’t have at least 2.2m of vertical space then you might consider having your roof elevated slightly, alternatively you could lower the ceilings on the floor below. These are costly options however, and if you simply want a little more head room outside of the main strip of the room then a dormer window could provide that extra space.
Is It A Stairway To Heaven Or Hell?
You’ll no doubt have wondered where a staircase would fit into a loft conversion, especially if you have limited room on the floor below. Usually you will need to sacrifice a little space from a room below the loft space, but a staircase leading up to a loft is always better off placed in line with the roof ridge, giving ample headroom once you reach the top. Alternatives include spiral staircases, but these have to be carefully planned to use the space effectively.
Is Space Your Final Frontier?
Lets address the issue of space. Loft spaces aren’t the most roomy, but many people don’t plan to create anything too dramatic with the space, it’s meant to be a practical, tidy and efficient use of the space. You’ll be amazed at just how much can be done with a little bit of space; a dormer conversion can help to add more light and standing room if you feel the slope of your roof impedes the space. Many people are surprised at just how much floor space they can get from this previously neglected area of their home.
