Lighting inspiration for your loft conversion
Make the most of your loft conversion and create a bespoke space that’ll encapsulate the peace and tranquility you need after a busy day. Once you’ve made your loft liveable, you have the capacity to make everything absolutely perfect, and no one wants a dark and dingy room. Think of the space you have, work with the room and take away inspiration from AKB Loft Conversions’ expert advice.
This month we will touch on both natural and artificial lighting options, catering for all tastes, styles and budgets:
Natural light – will keep your room light, airy and the energy bills low. It is also a well known fact that sunlight can help lift moods, making you healthier and more productive.
Velux windows – you may already be aware, but large windows have the ability to expand the feel of any space. With Velux windows this will not only give your room no end of natural light, but lots of character too. Additionally, they provide privacy as they’re angled towards the sky – great for houses in close proximity to others. Depending on the use of your conversion, Velux windows can add a romantic touch, come rain or shine and even star gazing at night. These windows are an extremely desirable feature that you will fall in love with, and could be the tipping point for future potential buyers.
Dormer windows – are an old classic window with unique characteristics of their own. They allow lots of light into any loft conversion and can work with both cottages and ultra modern homes. They are generally more expensive due to the extra expense of the mini roof, guttering and tiling, rather than just the window itself. This being said, they do also allow height in a room and a view across a landscape – great for people living in picturesque areas.
LED spotlighting – these lights are environmentally friendly as they use less power, but are still a great way to light up a room. Even if you have large windows in your loft, LED lights can be great in the evenings when it gets dark, allowing you to choose the direction of light and create the perfect ambience. If you really want, there is the option to group your lights to come on and off collectively. This can be done towards the front and back of the room, using different circuits and switches.
Free standing lamps – think like a designer: lamps could add a lot of character to your room. There is a huge amount of variety, including multi-head tiered lamps, tripod lamps, adjustable reading lamps, floor lamps, nautical lamps and many more.
Sensored lighting – a convenient source of light that’ll turn on when you enter and turn off when sense movement isn’t detected. These lights are ideal around the staircases to the loft, reducing the likelihood of any tumbles. Motion sensor lighting is environmentally friendly, works well in easily accessible storage rooms and gyms, but isn’t ideal for bedrooms.
Mood lighting – installing a light with a dimmer setting can be ideal for all moods. Whether you’re reading and would like the full light or you’re watching a film and you wish for the light to be lowered, this is the solution to all. Alternatively, you could decorate with fairy lights, or set up a colour changing lamp as a spot of colour could really be the answer after a tough day.
Additional ideas – it’s not just windows and artificial lights that can open up a room. Mirrors placed opposite windows can enhance light in the room, giving the illusion that it is much more spacious.
