Soundproofing Your Loft Conversion

Sometimes our hobbies can impend on others’ peace and quiet and it may be affecting those inside the house or even outside, annoying our neighbours. However, if you have a loft conversion, embrace your desires and have that music, gaming, gym or cinematic room you’ve been dreaming of! Don’t be scared to crank up the surround sound or turn up the music because where there’s a will, there’s a way. There are many ways to soundproof your loft to ensure you get the most out of your home, whilst keeping the peace.

Ways to soundproof:

Soundproof materials – mineral wool (sound quilts) and acoustic foam (panels) are the most commonly used soundproofing materials, however you can use other items like  soundboards.

Stud walls – by implementing these you can add a space measuring one inch between your new stud wall and the existing wall, the idea is to fill the gap with soundproofing materials (in this case sound quilts). This process will block the sound vibrations and muffle the noise.

Barriers – these can be placed inside foam or whatever spongy material you have used – wood or plasterboard are usually added as the ‘barrier’.

Acoustic tiles – these can be used to dampen any noise, ideal for music rooms – they can look really stylish and can reduce sound being released through floors, walls and ceilings.

Windows – whether you have velux windows or dormer windows, have double glazing installed to ensure that sound is absorbed here too.

Why soundproofing your loft could be beneficial to your loft conversion:

  • You can stay up watching a film, without waking the children
  • You’ll no longer hear or make the dog bark next door
  • The neighbours will no longer complain
  • Passers by outside won’t wake you up in the middle of the night
  • Say goodbye to noisy traffic

Let your loft conversion be a place where you’re not worried about the noise and let it be a place of complete relaxation, so it can be your go-to place after a long day. It won’t take much, but with a little help from soundproofing, you’ll be on your way to having the perfect versatile loft conversion to suit all your needs.
